Its story began in 1936, when it was first built as a spa hotel in Deba, a place where travellers sought rest by the sea. However, the Civil War changed its course. Years later, it was repurposed as an ikastola, an educational space where generations would grow and learn.

Today, the building has been reborn as Hiru Uhinak, a boutique hotel in Deba that blends history, sustainability and genuine hospitality. It is a place designed for those seeking a peaceful seaside retreat, where every corner evokes calm and a connection with nature.

The story of Hiru Uhinak

Our journey in hospitality began 20 years ago in France, almost by chance. Since then, we’ve learnt and grown with each project, but Hiru Uhinak is special: it represents our return home.

The Basque coast, with its sea, mountains and culture, has always held deep meaning for us. That’s why we wanted to create a hotel that honoured its essence, history and surroundings, offering travellers an authentic experience in Deba.

The meaning of Hiru Uhinak

THE LEGEND OF THE THREE WAVES

The name Hiru Uhinak means “Three Waves” in Basque and is inspired by an ancient Basque legend. According to the tale, a sailor fell under the spell of a witch and had to face three great waves:
1. The wave of milk, symbolising life.
2. The wave of tears, representing suffering.
3. The wave of blood, the most dangerous, destined to swallow him forever.
The sailor endured the first two waves but, when the third came, he cast his harpoon and killed the witch hiding within it. In doing so, he reclaimed his freedom and his destiny.
This tale reflects the values of Hiru Uhinak: identity and connection with the sea.
